Analysis part 3 - editing
The editing of the music video was by far the longest and most drawn out process of the project by far. Through the course of the music video it is easy to see how much time went into this. As one can see when they watch this video not 2 seconds in there is use of cuts and transition effects that go parallel with the beat of the opening of the music.
When analysing this piece of work one must look at the individual techniques executed, things such as the use of cross dissolves transitions, visual effects, jump cuts etc. One use of cross dissolve is when the camera pans through the branches of a tree which then dissolves into the visual of me (lip-syncher) on top of the rugby post singing the song, a second one being where the camera pans and then centres on the rising sun, it hen cross dissolves onto my head in the centre of the frame lip-synching to create a graphic match.
The use of fade ins and outs is quite obvious to the audience as one cannot help but notice these effects being used just 2 seconds in as multiple shots of the landscape and scenery are being shown then a fade in effect is used to once again go to the person doing the lip-synching. The visual effects used in are things that change or distort the images shown much like the one where the second boy/ love interest (Alex Fanner) shows up. As he walks towards the camera the blur on screen begins to lift and brings everything into focus. The second use of this technique is that in certain scenes where the main character (protagonist) of the music video in a sense is talking to the love interest. It’s to make those sequences seem like a dream sequence. The cuts in this sequence are used to make it show that a lapse of time has passed, this symbolises how much time the two have spent together and how when sitting on the benches with each other the two are slowly moving closer to each other each time.
A multitude of jump cut are used towards the end of the music video to show that time is neither going to and thro like it was in the first half or so of the music video. This in particular is most obvious in the 8-section part of the song where the lip synching is taking place on a stage. The use of this jump cut technique is more just to show off a variety of angles of the lip-synching and to give a sense of depth to the music video so not all lip synching shots are just static shots of me standing in place moving my mouth staring at a camera lense.

Analysis Part 2 - Camera
The camera work that was used was slightly varied and a lot of tests we tried obviously did not make it into the final product. One example of material that ended up dead on the cutting room floor would be that of the filming we did in the lower site’s hall where we attempted a tracking shot by putting a couple of pairs of roller blades on the bottom of each tripod leg (this fail horribly though as the skates kept falling out from underneath it).
When filming the shots of the outside I simply used the camera without a tripod and panned from one side to the other in a slow manner to show the surrounding sky and give a more dynamic view instead of having too many static shots, because of this it was easier to then edit in later with things such as cross dissolves. A tracking shot was also used when I was in the park as I was moving around doing the lip synching, Jake was in one place following my movements so that all the lip synching sections weren’t just shots of me standing in the centre of the camera at middle distance moving my mouth up and down as though someone had a string on my jaw moving it up and down to audio like Larry King is now days.
A variety of shots were used from extreme close ups to long shots as one can see when watching. A long shot was used when I was on top of the rugby post over the park while and an ECU was used when the only things that was in the frame were my eyes. The long distance for that particular scene was used to display not only the scenery of the sky behind me but also the to symbolize how I was lot in thought so I was at a distance not only from the camera but from the world, while on the other hand the ECU displays the opposite as its so close to my face to show that I’ve come crushing down into reality and have realised what I’ve lost as I then shout “I can’t sleep!”
In the 8-section of the music video I filmed my self on stage though the thing with this is instead of just doing the one take we done multiple shots from different angles as one is a long shot another is a medium low angle shot and the other is a medium shot from my side at eye level.

Analysis Part 1 - Mise en Scene
The mise en scene of the music video was something that I want on the whole to be something that had relation to the sky so that in some way or another it linked to the title of the song obviously being ‘Glamorous sky’. A second reason being that shots where the sky was behind me seemed as though it would be something very striking and able to grab the attention of a viewer. A second thing one can see is where I show panning shots of the sky and such. This was my attempt to put emphasis on the world around us and how if we aren’t so complacent and look around us we can see that everything shares a certain amount of beauty or in one way or another (even in Dagenham), and what makes that message even truer is that all those shots were actually filmed on my way to school on an ordinary morning in winter.
A second thing that people may not notice is that the reason my hair was so long and that I was donning bit of a beard is that I was attempting to actually resemble the artist Bentley Jones who actually performed the song so in some shots it works such as when the sun is shining on me and my hair is a ginger colour while in others it may not work so well such as when I’m on the stage in the later half of the music video (middle-8 section of the song), where my hair seems to have changed to blonde.
In the first half a lot of it is comprised of flash backs to what could’ve happened in previous i.e. me losing the girl and finding comfort with another guy (Alex Fanner) The mise en scene here is supposed to be slightly different here from what I look like when doing the lip synching as it makes a clear line between past and present. As one can see, in the present I’m doing lip-synching and my hair is long and the blue hoodey I’m wearing has no writing or anything on it and the colour is fading while in the past my hair is short my hoodey has writing on it etc. The obvious difference between the two being the long hair while the more subtle thing being the hoodey as it changes from past to present and in a way showing a rather large laps in time if it’s all become faded. (A little tid-bit of knowledge is that I filmed the shots of the after the present by a difference of a month or so).
Lastly I tried a variety of things with the lighting in the music video. The first attempt was when I done some filming in my room, instead of having the main light on which would have illuminated the entire room I chose to use a small lap which was placed either side of the tripod as to give it an effect that I was regretful of the past as it would barley illuminate me in the frame and a fair portion of my face was cast into the shadows. A second thing was that I went for a lot of natural light so a lot of the time the sun was the main light source. The use of this was actually to change the colour of my hair as for some reason it made it go ginger and so I looked more like the artist you can it does work while if an artificial light source was used my hair went all weird and wonderful colours i.e. blonde like in the hall or dark brown when in my bedroom.
That’s all for the first part of the evaluation, the second part is coming out today (The digipak and magazine advertisement are also on the way at the same time of writing this and a survey is also being made at the same time (how’s that for multi tasking (so stop worrying Mr.J =P))).
alles läuft reibungslos, auf wiedersehen.
