Analysis Part 1 - Mise en Scene

The mise en scene of the music video was something that I want on the whole to be something that had relation to the sky so that in some way or another it linked to the title of the song obviously being ‘Glamorous sky’. A second reason being that shots where the sky was behind me seemed as though it would be something very striking and able to grab the attention of a viewer. A second thing one can see is where I show panning shots of the sky and such. This was my attempt to put emphasis on the world around us and how if we aren’t so complacent and look around us we can see that everything shares a certain amount of beauty or in one way or another (even in Dagenham), and what makes that message even truer is that all those shots were actually filmed on my way to school on an ordinary morning in winter.

A second thing that people may not notice is that the reason my hair was so long and that I was donning bit of a beard is that I was attempting to actually resemble the artist Bentley Jones who actually performed the song so in some shots it works such as when the sun is shining on me and my hair is a ginger colour while in others it may not work so well such as when I’m on the stage in the later half of the music video (middle-8 section of the song), where my hair seems to have changed to blonde.

In the first half a lot of it is comprised of flash backs to what could’ve happened in previous i.e. me losing the girl and finding comfort with another guy (Alex Fanner) The mise en scene here is supposed to be slightly different here from what I look like when doing the lip synching as it makes a clear line between past and present. As one can see, in the present I’m doing lip-synching and my hair is long and the blue hoodey I’m wearing has no writing or anything on it and the colour is fading while in the past my hair is short my hoodey has writing on it etc. The obvious difference between the two being the long hair while the more subtle thing being the hoodey as it changes from past to present and in a way showing a rather large laps in time if it’s all become faded. (A little tid-bit of knowledge is that I filmed the shots of the after the present by a difference of a month or so).

Lastly I tried a variety of things with the lighting in the music video. The first attempt was when I done some filming in my room, instead of having the main light on which would have illuminated the entire room I chose to use a small lap which was placed either side of the tripod as to give it an effect that I was regretful of the past as it would barley illuminate me in the frame and a fair portion of my face was cast into the shadows. A second thing was that I went for a lot of natural light so a lot of the time the sun was the main light source. The use of this was actually to change the colour of my hair as for some reason it made it go ginger and so I looked more like the artist you can it does work while if an artificial light source was used my hair went all weird and wonderful colours i.e. blonde like in the hall or dark brown when in my bedroom.

That’s all for the first part of the evaluation, the second part is coming out today (The digipak and magazine advertisement are also on the way at the same time of writing this and a survey is also being made at the same time (how’s that for multi tasking (so stop worrying Mr.J =P))).

alles läuft reibungslos, auf wiedersehen.
